The design was focused entirely on ecological sensitive principles and shines as a prototype in the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality of with a facility that educates surrounding communities on how to relate more appropriately their natural environment - in this case the Leeupan. The brief was expanded to include tourist facilities which are expected to enhance the sustainability of the project. The development is an experimental complex making use of a variety of alternative and natural building techniques and materials. As well as including an element of tourist interest which will translate into economic activity in the neighbouring community, this facility is also intended to function as a living laboratory for the benefit of practitioners in this field and academics alike. Some of the technologies employed include: • Rammed Earth Construction • Straw-bale construction • Cob wall Construction • Green roof technology • Thermal Mass earth floor • Evaporative Cooling systems • Earthtube technology • Solar Enargy • Trombe Wall technology The next phase of the project which will include monitoring of these various systems during operation is deemed to be as important as the construction phase.
